An anti-capital punishment novel in which a delivery boy in South Carolina kills, rapes and mutilates two women in their eighties. The prosecution demands death, but psychologist Portia McTeague thinks that, based on experience from her own life, his was an act of insanity due to a disturbed childhood. Problem is how to bring this out for the jury. Co-author Sultan is a forensic psychiatrist.
